The WOW Factor for Woodburn Park
On behalf of the Woodburn Chamber, we would like to thank Richmond Valley Council and the Woodburn community for the work and input that went into Woodburn Park upgrade - our town certainly now has the WOW Factor!
The information below was posted on this website in the lead-up to the Woodburn WOW Factor Market Stand and Forum. The Chamber organised these events to encourage the community to get involved and add their ideas to the park upgrade.
Woodburn Park is one of four signature projects under Richmond Valley Council's Community Strategic Plan, and Council has raised $500,000 through a special levy to spend on the Park in the next financial year. The upgrade is considered vital to the ongoing vitality of Woodburn post-bypass. This is because research prepared for RMS indicates that "small towns (less than 2,500 population) are generally more at risk of adverse economic impacts (highway generated trade and employment)" (Parolin 2011).
This is a rare opportunity for Woodburn and it's finally happening. Get involved to create a shared vision!
The Woodburn WOW Factor Stand at the Woodburn Markets
8 am to 2 pm on Saturday, 14 May 2016
Please come along and talk to us about your ideas for the Riverside Park. This will be about getting as many ideas as possible - big or small, no idea is a bad idea!
The Woodburn WOW Factor Forum in the CWA rooms
5.30pm on Wednesday, 25 May 2016
Experienced Council staff will facilitate a community forum to round out a few alternative concepts, which Council will cost in June to ensure they are feasible.
We're trying hard to get the word out to every resident, community group and business. If you have a Facebook account, please consider registering for the event and sharing with your family and neighbours at www.facebook.com/events/wowfactorforum.
Why everyone should be involved
Only the Woodburn community can develop a shared vision and come up with the WOW factor that Woodburn needs. We should dream big, while remaining realistic about funding. We also need to be understanding of different views in the community and we will all need to be prepared to give and take. Change can be exciting, but it can also bring a sense of loss, especially when people have fought to establish the existing facilities in the Park. We need to learn from wins and losses from the past. If we work together, we can find creative ways to ensure a net benefit for all. That's why is important for everyone to be involved.
As the umbrella group for Woodburn, the Chamber has the resources to drive and facilitate notifying the community. We have spent the last six months developing a newsletter, Facebook page and website to help disseminate information through the community and to help create a discussion at this important time. Now it's over to you. Every single resident, community group and business should be involved and the Chamber will do all it can to make sure your voice is heard.
The previous concept map had been around forever, so Council developed some fresh concept maps. These were presented to the community in April, with the understanding that we have to come up with the WOW factor. Nobody collaborated on these maps - they are simply a tool to kick off discussion in the community. Scroll down to see the maps below.
Council has advised that it has found funding to progress plans this year, so we can benefit from that by acting now! In the next month, we need to come up with a few alternatives in order for Council to undertake cost estimates in June. Due to the tight timeframe, the Chamber has facilitated the above opportunities for the community to get involved. Please spread the word and make this happen!
If you can't attend the above, please send your ideas to Council or to the Chamber at any time
